How This Calculator Handles Time Zones
Every time value you enter is treated as a clock reading in whichever zone you attach to it, then converted internally to a single point in time before the two ends are compared. If you leave a zone set to "Local System Time," the value is read using your device's own time zone; pick a specific offset like "India Standard Time" or "UTC" instead, and that clock reading is anchored to that offset regardless of where you're sitting. This is what makes it possible to compare "9:00 PM in Delhi" against "9:00 PM in New York" and get a meaningful answer, rather than the calculator silently assuming both times are in the same zone.
One detail worth understanding: the zone options in the dropdown are fixed UTC offsets (for example,
+05:30 for India Standard Time, -04:00 for Eastern Daylight Time), not
self-adjusting time zone names. India Standard Time doesn't observe daylight saving, so
+05:30 is correct for every date of the year. US zones are different — "Eastern Daylight
Time" (UTC-4) only applies during the US daylight-saving period (roughly mid-March to early November);
the rest of the year, US Eastern clocks run on Eastern Standard Time at UTC-5 instead. The dropdown
lists Eastern Daylight Time as a distinct option specifically so you can pick the correct offset for
the date you're actually calculating, rather than getting an automatically-wrong answer for half the
year.
A Worked Example
Say you're scheduling a call and want to know the real gap between "9:00 PM, 7 August 2026" read as India Standard Time and "9:00 PM, 7 August 2026" read as Eastern Daylight Time. Even though both show the same clock face reading, the actual elapsed time between them is 9 hours and 30 minutes — because IST is UTC+5:30 and EDT is UTC-4, a 9.5-hour gap between the two offsets. Flip it around: 8:00 PM IST on that date converts to 2:30 PM UTC, which lands at 10:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time the same calendar day — useful for figuring out what local time a call actually falls at on the other side. As a sanity check, 9:30 AM IST and 4:00 AM UTC on the same date come out to zero difference when compared, confirming they're the same instant, just expressed in two different offsets.
Crossing Midnight
The calculator handles a range that crosses midnight without any special handling required from you — it works entirely in absolute time internally, so 11:30 PM to 1:15 AM the next day is simply treated as 1 hour and 45 minutes, the same as any other interval. The one place this can trip people up is when entering dates manually: if you pick "7 August" for the start and "7 August" for the end but mean "7 August night into 8 August morning," you'll get a negative or unexpectedly small result unless you correctly change the end date to 8 August. The calculator does detect when the end value is actually before the start value and flips the direction to "Backward" automatically, but it can't guess which calendar day you meant if you typed the wrong one.
Common Mistakes
The most frequent one is leaving both zones on "Local System Time" when comparing two genuinely different locations — if both inputs default to your own device's zone, you'll get the difference between two clock readings in the same zone, not the real-world gap between two places. Another is picking a fixed daylight-saving offset for a date outside the daylight-saving period — using "Eastern Daylight Time" (UTC-4) for a January date will be off by an hour, since January in the US runs on Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5). Finally, when using Compare mode, remember that each of the four ranges keeps its own independent start and end zone selectors, so it's easy to accidentally leave an earlier range's zone setting unchanged after copying values across rows — always double check each row's zone dropdowns before reading the comparison table.

Does this calculator automatically adjust for daylight saving time?
No — the zone options are fixed UTC offsets, so "Eastern Daylight Time" always means UTC-4 and "Central Standard Time" always means UTC-5, regardless of the date you enter. You need to pick the offset that's actually correct for the date in question; for US zones that means choosing the daylight or standard variant depending on whether your date falls inside the daylight-saving period.
What happens if the end time is earlier than the start time?
The calculator still computes a duration — it swaps the two values internally, calculates the difference, and labels the result "Backward" instead of "Forward" so you know the direction was reversed. This is what lets you enter dates in either order without getting a negative or invalid result.
