How SIP Growth Is Actually Calculated

Every SIP figure on this page comes from compounding each monthly contribution individually from the month it's invested. In formula terms, the calculator adds your monthly amount to the running total and multiplies by (1 + monthly rate) once per month, for every month of the chosen duration — where the monthly rate is your expected annual CAGR divided by 100 and by 12. This is different from compounding a single lump sum: your first month's contribution compounds for the full duration, but your final month's contribution barely compounds at all, since it's only invested for one month before the calculation ends.

A Worked Example

Using the calculator's own default inputs — Rs. 5,000 a month at an expected 12% CAGR for 10 years — total invested comes to Rs. 6,00,000 and the projected final value is about Rs. 11,61,695, a gain of roughly Rs. 5,61,695, meaning the gain alone is nearly as large as everything actually invested. Extend the same monthly SIP to 20 years instead of 10, and the final value doesn't just double — it grows to about Rs. 49,95,740, more than 4.3 times the 10-year result, even though total invested only doubles to Rs. 12,00,000. That's compounding doing most of the work in the later years, which is also why starting a SIP early matters more than most people expect: the extra years at the start of a long SIP contribute disproportionately to the final number.

Why a Small CAGR Difference Matters

Assumed return has an outsized effect over long durations. The same Rs. 5,000/month SIP over 10 years grows to about Rs. 11,61,695 at a 12% assumed CAGR, but to about Rs. 13,10,457 at 14% — a difference of roughly Rs. 1,48,762 from just a 2-percentage-point change in the return assumption. Because mutual fund returns are market-linked and not guaranteed like an FD rate, it's worth running the comparison at a conservative CAGR as well as an optimistic one, rather than relying on a single assumed number for financial planning.

Common Mistakes

The most common one is treating the "Expected CAGR" input as a guaranteed return rather than an assumption — equity mutual fund returns vary significantly year to year and the actual CAGR over your real investment period could be meaningfully higher or lower than what you enter here. Another is comparing SIP scenarios with different durations without accounting for how much of the final value gap is simply due to more time invested versus a genuinely different monthly commitment — use the comparison table's "Total Invested" column alongside "Final Value" to separate the two effects. People also sometimes stop or pause a SIP during a market downturn, which this calculator doesn't model — the "Rupee Cost Averaging" benefit mentioned above specifically depends on continuing to invest through both up and down markets, not just when values are rising.
