Most APIs return JSON with every unnecessary space stripped out, because minified JSON transfers faster over the network — a response like {"id":42,"name":"Ravi","tags":["admin","active"]} is efficient for a computer to parse but genuinely hard for a person to scan, especially once it's nested three or four levels deep with dozens of fields. A JSON formatter re-indents that same data with consistent spacing and line breaks, turning an unreadable single line into a structure your eyes can actually follow.

Why nested structures break down without formatting

JSON's real complexity shows up in nested objects and arrays — an object containing an array of objects, each with their own nested objects inside. Reading this correctly in its minified form means manually counting matching curly braces and square brackets to figure out where one object ends and the next begins, which is exactly the kind of tedious, error-prone task a formatter removes entirely by aligning matching brackets vertically and indenting each nested level consistently.
