2048 was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014 as a personal weekend project, itself inspired by an earlier game called 1024 and, before that, a game called Threes!. The rules are almost absurdly simple to state: swipe in any of four directions, every tile slides as far as it can, and two tiles with the same number merge into one tile with double the value. The goal is to reach a tile numbered 2048, though most players keep playing well past that once they realize higher tiles are possible.

Why the reward pattern is so effective

2048 works on a variable, escalating reward structure. Small merges (2 into 4, 4 into 8) happen constantly and require almost no planning, giving frequent small hits of visible progress. Larger merges (256 into 512, or higher) happen rarely and require several moves of setup, so when they land, they feel disproportionately satisfying relative to the single swipe that triggered them. This mix of frequent small rewards and occasional large ones is a well-known pattern behind why simple mechanical games hold attention far longer than their complexity would suggest.

The tension between growing and running out of room

Every swipe that doesn't produce a merge still spawns a new tile (usually a 2, occasionally a 4) somewhere empty on the board. This means the board is under constant, gradual pressure to fill up even while you're making progress — the game doesn't reward you with more space, only with bigger numbers in less space. That built-in tension, where success (bigger tiles) doesn't relieve the underlying problem (a shrinking number of empty cells), is a big part of why 2048 stays tense even after you've cleared a satisfying merge.

The corner strategy that separates casual and serious players

Most players who consistently reach the 2048 tile and beyond use a corner-anchoring strategy: pick one corner (commonly bottom-left or bottom-right) and try to keep your highest-value tile locked there permanently, building a descending chain of values along one edge and avoiding swipes that would disturb that anchor tile's position. Players who swipe in all four directions somewhat randomly, chasing whichever merge looks available in the moment, tend to fragment their high-value tiles across the board and run out of room far sooner.

Why "one more move" keeps happening

Because merges compound — a single swipe can sometimes trigger a chain of several merges at once if the board lines up right — there's always a plausible sense that the next swipe might be the one that unlocks a big combination. That near-miss feeling, where progress feels one move away even after a mediocre swipe, is a large part of why sessions run longer than intended.
